Designed and Made in India, our limited edition products are inspired by original read-aloud poems that speak of the spontaneity of childhood and our cultural values. This gender-neutral gift set, part of our Zoo Treat poem collection comes packed in a reusable muslin bag with an interactive game tag, ready for gifting. It contains:
1 x angarkha top: 100% organic cotton hand-block printed by traditional Ajrakh artisans. Tie-up closures and flat seams for ease of wearing and fit.
1 x pyjama: 100% organic cotton; Elasticated waist and bottom hem.
This gift set reflects perfectly Whitewater's passion for combining purity with tradition. The bottom is handblock printed by traditional Ajrakh printers in a remote village in Kutch in Gujarat, while the top is stitched out of pristine white organic cotton. The design of the pyjama is locally referred to as rai dana and is part of the indigenous vocabulary of the artisans. The clothes are ethically stitched in Bangalore in a small independent production unit with less than 10 employees.
Whitewater Kids works with Organic cotton to make clothes for babies because it is grown without the use of genetically modified seeds, without the use of toxic fertilizers and pesticides. And since it is not readily available in large quantities, we thought of using it judiciously for an ideal purpose – for making baby products. As you know, a baby’s skin is more absorbent than an adult’s.
Also, the colour used by them is either herbal or natural dyes for our earthy palette. Herbal dyes are derived from herbs found in nature such as manjistha or madder, haldi or turmeric and indigo to name a few. The cloth is dyed such that the medicinal properties of each of these plants is retained in the cloth. They include fruit and vegetable wastes like the rind of pomegranate and onion skins. Our natural dye collection showcases the skills of traditional Ajrakh artisans in India. Ajrakh is a resist block printing technique, traditionally known for its geometric patterns and labour intensive double-sided printing.
On the other hand, azo is a chemical compound that is carcinogenic and banned by many countries in the world. For our bright hues, we use azo-free dyes.
These products are designed by the founder and made in various parts of rural and urban India by passionate manufacturers who share our ideals. They work with sustainable and artisanal textile crafts of India. All the cuddles and teethers are embroidered and stuffed by hand by traditional women artisans in tribal Tamil Nadu or in Ahmedabad.
Their production partners either follow fair trade principles laid down by the World Fair Trade Organisation or individually decide their own wages based on the time and the level of expertise required.
