The skin of the banana stem is spun into yarn which is then dyed by hand and woven into these sturdy and colourful dining table essentials. The fibre, which is similar to jute and hemp, is extracted from stems that are the by-product of banana cultivation and usually burnt as ‘agricultural waste’ in the orchards surroundings Bangalore.
The fibre is becoming popular in handicraft manufacture because of its strength, biodegradability and environmental compatibility.
Each runner takes 3-4 days to complete and begins by spinning the banana fibre into yarn on the charkha. This runner is made using eco-friendly dyes.
Eco Clocks Conservation Projects is a social enterprise that produces a range of eco-friendly lifestyle products. This organisation works largely with women members of the SC/ ST community in the areas surrounding Bangalore. All the processes involved in making these products are undertaken by hand by these artisans who earn a sustainable livelihood from them.
