Cotton and polyester two of the most popular materials to make Tshirts although comfortable, are also environmentally draining. While cotton demands huge quantities of water to grow, polyester is essentially a thermoplastic polymer made from coal and petroleum.

Bamboo, on the other hand, is a fast growing grass that is grown commercially. It is a versatile plant that uses onethird the water that cotton needs and also helps absorb more CO2 than hardwoods, also preventing soil erosion. Bamboo tribe utilises these qualities of the grass to make good quality and stylish garments.

Partner story

The duo behind Bamboo tribe are trying to bring about sustainable change in a space that is rapidly moving toward unsustainability. At a time where the craze is Fast Fashion low prices, no emphasis on quality, discarding clothes frequently and staying on trend  we see the need to shift in the other direction, and fast. In a world fast running out of space and resources, we should be buying highquality clothes that last long and remain timeless in style, while also ensuring that the materials used to make them are not destroying our planet. This is what  Bamboo Tribe aims to do: produce highquality, welltailored, wardrobe staples, made from butterysoft bamboo fabric, better for you and the environment.

Your impact

By purchasing apparel from the Bamboo Tribe, you are supporting the sustainable fashion industry. With each Bamboo Tribe Original that you add to your wardrobe, you're making a statement that quality matters, wastefulness is passe and you won't buy just anything that big corporations say you need to have. Each garment made by this organisation has saved hundreds of litres of water during its production. Your Tshirt will still be comfortable, stylish and versatile; but each time you wear one from Bamboo Tribe, you are backing an ecofriendly, sustainable apparel organisation fighting against the wastefulness of fast fashion.

Why is bamboo better than cotton and polyester?

The Tshirt. A wardrobe staple for most. We often have heaps of them in our cupboards too. They are generally lowmaintenance, versatile and comfortable. Chances are most tshirts in your wardrobe are made from cotton, and the rest (mostly used for exercise and sports) are made from polyester. This is where the problem lies. Did you know that your Tshirts could be causing a huge damaging impact on the environment?

Bamboo on the other hand uses less than 30% of the water to grow than cotton does per acre. In addition, the yield of Bamboo per acre is atleast 50 times that of cotton, which means overall the fibre needed to make a Bamboo tshirt could use 150 times less water than cotton. We currently use a 50:50 blend of Bamboo and cotton (for increased tenacity), which means every Bamboo Tribe Tee saves approximately 1850 Litres of water!

Bamboo can use as little 150 times less water than cotton!

Washing our clothes less frequently can also help reduce consumption of water, which is fast becoming a scarce resource. While this may sound strange to you, as we are all driven to believe that our clothes must be washed after every use, this simply isn't the case. And here's where Bamboo shines again. Being naturally antimicrobial, Bamboo fabric kills bacteria that can be harmful and also cause odour. While it's up to you to decide how often you want to wash your clothes, Bamboo Tribe Originals certainly don't need to be washed as frequently as its cotton and polyester counterparts.

The other two main impacts of cotton are the use of pesticides and soil erosion. Some studies show that nearly 25% of the world's pesticide use is purely to grow cotton for fabric. That's massive. Also, growing cotton erodes the soil it is planted on due to extensive ploughing which causes the topsoil to be washed away. On the other hand, Bamboo requires little to no pesticides to grow, once again due to it's natural antimicrobial property, and since bamboo shoots are only cut off to form new shoots rather than uprooting the plant itself, soil erosion does not occur. In fact, Bamboo's extensive root system binds the soil, protecting against erosion, as well as dripfeeding excess water into the soil to raise the water table.

The Lowdown  Bamboo wins

Bamboo fibres can use as little 150 times less water than cotton
Bamboo plantations can raise the water table
Bamboo fabric doesn't need to be washed as often as cotton and polyester
Bamboo can be grown without pesticides
Bamboo's root system protects against soil erosion
Bamboo is not composed of thermoplastics

And best of all, bamboo is light, soft and breathable in fact, more so than even Egyptian cotton AND it is moisturewicking and naturally antiodour. So you could practically replace BOTH cotton and polyester with Bamboo clothes!

Stay comfortable. Stay smart. Stay responsible. Switch to Bamboo.

Why we like it

Easy to wear and comfortable to be in, Tshirts are a mandatory item in all wardrobes. From a casual day out with your friends or an intense exercise session, the Tshirt has always been a reliable pal. What we love most about the Bamboo Tribe Tshirts is the fact that each one of them has saved hundreds of litres of water at the time of cultivation. They are very soft on your skin and super comfy whether you want to lounge or wear on a day out, and so, we highly recommend them!

Tanvi says

Comfort for me, is spelled with a Tee. My cupboard is filled with more Tshirts than other apparel and irrespective of the weather or occasion, I always opt for this supremely comfortable garment. Bamboo Tribe ensures that I don't have to compromise on this level of comfort while also maintaining a sustainable, ecofriendly option to manufacture the Tshirts. As environmentallyfriendly as they are, the designs are also a stylish combination of colours and patterns. I stand out in the crowd both for my fashion sense and ecoconsciousness!
